How Crowdfunding Could Impact Film Financing

Law360, New York (May 6, 2013, 12:55 PM EDT) -- The highly publicized campaign to fund a “Veronica Mars” movie without question shattered crowdfunding records. The campaign, which started with a $2 million goal, raked in nearly $5.5 million. Kickstarter.com proves a Web-based platform through which a filmmaker can solicit donations from the public in return for memorabilia, DVDs or other chotchkies can be very successful.

Since its launch in 2009, Kickstarter has helped 10,000 filmmakers raise more than $88 million. However, most of those are student projects with budgets of less than $10,000.
