Senate Passes Bill To Let States Collect Online Sales Tax

Law360, Los Angeles (May 6, 2013, 9:45 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Senate on Monday passed the Marketplace Fairness Act of 2013, which would for the first time give state and local governments the ability to collect sales tax on out-of-state, catalog and online sales.

The bill, S. 743, passed the Senate 69-27 on Monday, in what lead sponsor Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., called a “strong bipartisan signal” that states should be able to enforce their own laws and that the federal government shouldn’t favor one business over another.
