EMC, Others Get Acacia Patent Nixed As Abstract Idea

Law360, New York (May 31, 2013, 8:05 PM EDT) -- A California federal judge on Wednesday invalidated a data storage patent asserted against EMC Corp. and others by a subsidiary of patent-licensing company Acacia Research Corp., ruling that it covers an abstract idea instituted using a computer and is not eligible for a patent.

U.S. District Judge Ronald Whyte granted a motion for summary judgment by defendants EMC, NetApp Inc. and Quantum Corp. and dismissed the suit by Compression Technology Solutions LLC with prejudice.
