Bipartisan Bill Proposes Sweeping Medicare Fraud Reforms

Law360, New York (June 11, 2013, 4:38 PM EDT) -- In the latest push to curtail Medicare and Medicaid fraud, U.S. lawmakers on Monday unveiled bipartisan legislation to increase rewards for whistleblowers, incentivize auditors to uncover more reimbursement errors and strengthen penalties for misusing patient data to submit bogus bills.

The legislation, which was introduced in both houses of Congress, is a signal that lawmakers aren’t taking their foot off the gas despite record-setting fraud recoveries under the Obama administration, and would in several instances expand efforts already being pursued by federal regulators.
