Walgreens To Pay $80M To End Painkiller Sales Probe

Law360, New York (June 11, 2013, 5:47 PM EDT) -- Drugstore giant Walgreen Co. has agreed to pay $80 million to end a federal investigation into allegations several of its Florida pharmacies and distribution centers failed to control sales of narcotic painkillers that illegally ended up on the black market, federal agents said Tuesday.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, which jointly announced the settlement with the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, said the $80 million in civil penalties that Walgreens agreed to pay is the largest such fine in DEA history. It closes...
