Soleus Demands $150M Over Fire-Prone Dehumidifiers

Law360, New York (June 14, 2013, 9:23 PM EDT) -- Home-comfort product maker Soleus International Inc. on Thursday hit Gree Electric Appliances Inc. of Zhuhai with a $150 million suit in California federal court, accusing the Chinese appliance maker of selling fire-prone dehumidifiers through Soleus and retaliating when Soleus reported the defect to the U.S. government.

Gree allegedly denied the dehumidifiers — sold in the U.S. via a joint venture with Soleus called Gree USA Inc. — were hazardous, pressured Soleus to cover up "mounting customer complaints" that the devices overheated and went up in flames,...
