Century-Old Mining Law May Become Greener

Law360 (January 24, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- The federal mining law, after more than a century, needs to be updated to include environmental protection regulations necessary in the 21st century, several witnesses told a Senate panel on Thursday.

While some witnesses continued to praise the Mining Law of 1872, others urged the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources to bring it up to speed by, for instance, imposing royalties on mining companies, giving more attention to other public land uses and adding restrictions to prevent further environmental damage.
