EU Seeks To Extend Merger Oversight To Minority Stakes

Law360, New York (June 21, 2013, 5:42 PM EDT) -- The European Commission announced potential amendments to its merger-control rules Thursday that would give it authority to regulate purchases of noncontrolling minority stakes and streamline the transfer of cases from member countries’ competition authorities to the commission.

The European Union’s executive branch is seeking public input on whether its merger regulation, which hasn’t been updated in almost a decade, should be overhauled to enable the commission to review attempted acquisitions of noncontrolling shareholdings, which the EU said can still give buyers considerable influence over target companies...
