Calif. Appeals Court Revives Dole Death Squad Suit

Law360, Los Angeles (June 24, 2013, 9:38 PM EDT) -- A California appeals court on Monday revived a wrongful death suit accusing Dole Food Co. Inc. of paying Colombian paramilitaries to kill 170 people near South American banana plantations, ruling a trial judge didn't properly notify plaintiffs' counsel before dismissing the complaint.

Lawyers representing 65 Colombian nationals argued earlier this month that the lower court had improperly given them a mere 24 hours' notice in advance of a hearing where it dismissed their suit, which alleged a Dole subsidiary paid a right-wing paramilitary group to use violence...
