Aspen Makes Another $1B Growth Play With New Merck Deal

Law360, New York (June 27, 2013, 12:20 PM EDT) -- Generic-drug maker Aspen Pharmacare Holdings Ltd. will put up about $1 billion for a Merck & Co. Inc. pharmaceutical manufacturing unit and a product portfolio, it said Thursday, marking its second big-ticket acquisition announcement in as many weeks.

Under the deal's terms, Aspen — Africa's biggest drugmaker — will swallow up an active pharmaceutical ingredient manufacturing plant located in the Netherlands plus nearly a dozen drug brands held by Merck, it said.
