US Gives Health Benefits To Same-Sex Employee Spouses

Law360, Washington (July 1, 2013, 5:43 PM EDT) -- The Obama administration announced Friday that a variety of federal benefits will be extended to federal employees' legal spouses now following last week's historic U.S. Supreme Court decision that struck down a portion of the Defense of Marriage Act.

In a memo released by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, federal employees' legal same-sex spouses are now eligible for health, life, dental, vision and long-term care insurance and will be able to receive deceased spouses' retirement benefits.
