Dozens Of Hospitals To Pay $34M In Qui Tam Deal

Law360, Los Angeles (July 2, 2013, 1:25 PM EDT) -- More than four dozen hospitals in 21 states have agreed to pay more than $34 million to the U.S. government to settle allegations that they submitted bogus Medicare claims for kyphoplasty, a procedure used to treat certain spinal fractures caused by osteoporosis, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Tuesday.

The settlements resolve claims that the 55 hospitals at issue frequently billed Medicare for kyphoplasty, a minimally invasive procedure typically performed in an outpatient manner without any need for a more costly hospital admission. The hospitals allegedly...
