Ex-FBI Director To Head Probe Of Deepwater Horizon Payouts

Law360, Los Angeles (July 2, 2013, 10:02 PM EDT) -- A Louisiana federal judge on Tuesday appointed former Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Louis J. Freeh as special master in an investigation into allegations of misconduct by an attorney for the court-supervised settlement program arising from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

The appointment comes less than two weeks after BP PLC said it wanted an independent investigation of the system handling payouts under the potentially $7.8 billion settlement, citing a report that an attorney under the court’s claims administrator accepted improper payments.
