Calif. Debt Collection Restrictions Signed Into Law

Law360, San Diego (July 12, 2013, 7:14 PM EDT) -- California Gov. Jerry Brown on Thursday signed legislation backed by the state attorney general that bars debt buyers from launching litigation or collection efforts unless they can verify the ownership and amount of a debt.

Brown approved S.B. 233, also known as the Fair Debt Buying Practices Act, after the measure cleared the California Assembly on a 72-0 vote earlier this month and passed the state Senate in May with a 36-0 vote.
