EU Official Questions Legality Of Daimler AC Coolant

Law360, New York (July 16, 2013, 7:01 PM EDT) -- A European Commission official indicated Tuesday that France may be allowed to block the sale of Daimler AG vehicles that use an air conditioning coolant that fails to meet EU pollution standards, even though the automaker claims the preferred coolant endangers passenger safety.

The controversy centers on the EU's mobile air conditioning, or MAC, directive, which was fully implemented at the beginning of 2013. The directive requires automakers to use a more environmentally friendly air conditioning coolant than was previously allowed.
