Beleaguered Milwaukee Archdiocese Eyes Bankruptcy

Law360, New York (January 31, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Milwaukee has revealed that it is running a $3 million deficit in its current budget due to fallout from a churchwide sexual abuse scandal, raising the possibility of bankruptcy.

The archdiocese, which revealed its budget woes in a series of meetings over the past two weeks, has no immediate plan to file for bankruptcy, which it regards as a last resort, according to spokeswoman Kathleen Hohl. But its current predicament makes bankruptcy more likely, she said.
