Texas Enacts Controversial Abortion Restrictions

Law360, Houston (July 18, 2013, 8:32 PM EDT) -- Texas Gov. Rick Perry signed into law Thursday a series of controversial abortion restrictions following weeks of opposition mounted by Democratic lawmakers who say the impact on women’s access to the procedure is unconstitutional.

Joined by fellow Republican lawmakers and political supporters, Perry formally approved H.B. 2, which bans most abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy and requires abortion providers to upgrade their facilities to qualify as ambulatory surgical centers by 2014, among other things.
