NY Jury Awards $190M Over Asbestos Injuries, Deaths

Law360, Los Angeles (July 24, 2013, 4:27 PM EDT) -- A New York jury Tuesday returned a $190 million verdict against boiler companies Cleaver-Brooks Inc. and Burnham LLC in a joint trial over lawsuits brought by five tradesmen who were exposed to asbestos on the job and later developed mesothelioma, according to the plaintiffs' counsel.

The $190 million judgment is thought to be the largest-ever consolidated asbestos verdict in New York City, according to Weitz & Luxenberg PC, which represented the plaintiffs. The jury returned its verdict Tuesday afternoon, finding Cleaver-Brooks and Burnham acted negligently and recklessly in exposing the workers to asbestos-tainted products and equipment. Tuesday's verdict capped an 11-week trial in New York state court.
