IIl. Sues ExxonMobil Over Hydrogen Sulfide Release

Law360, New York (July 25, 2013, 7:09 PM EDT) -- Illinois on Thursday hit ExxonMobil Oil Corp. with a lawsuit alleging the oil giant’s refinery near Chicago violated the state’s Environmental Protection Act after an equipment malfunction caused an uncontrolled release of hydrogen sulfide in March.

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan and Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow said in a statement that the release at the refinery, located in Channahon Township, Ill., lasted more than nine and a half hours, beginning shortly after 9 p.m. on March 1 and continuing until it was discovered by...
