Law360, New York (July 26, 2013, 3:41 PM EDT) -- In a bid to cut back on the rampant slaughter of sharks, Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Friday signed a bipartisan bill that makes it illegal to possess, sell or distribute the fins of all but two common species in New York, where the brutal practice of "finning" the beasts already is illegal.
The governor signed legislation sponsored in the New York State Senate by Buffalo Republican Mark Grisanti and in the State Assembly by Brooklyn Democrat Alan Maisel.
