Senators Push For Tougher Federal Trade Secret Laws

Law360, New York (July 29, 2013, 2:51 PM EDT) -- Sens. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., released draft legislation Monday that would enhance U.S. criminal laws against the theft of trade secrets, particularly by means of computer hacking from foreign countries.

The proposed legislation, authored by Whitehouse and Graham, would make various small changes to the U.S. criminal code to heighten coverage of trade secrets theft.

Among other changes, the amendments would expand the Economic Espionage Act to more clearly cover government-sponsored hacking, clarify that U.S. laws cover hacking even when the perpetrator is...
