Med School Slaps AstraZeneca With Crestor Patent Suit

Law360, New York (August 1, 2013, 6:13 PM EDT) -- The research division of the University of South Carolina's medical school hit AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals LP with a patent infringement suit in federal court Thursday, alleging that the drugmaker willfully pilfered its technology in its clinical trial for the drug Crestor.

The Medical University of South Carolina Foundation for Research Development alleged that AstraZeneca initiated its so-called JUPITER trial for Crestor, traditionally used to treat high cholesterol, to determine whether it could also be used to treat patients exhibiting vascular inflammation.
