Many Sites Lack Adequate Privacy Policies, Regulators Find

Law360, New York (August 13, 2013, 3:50 PM EDT) -- More than a thousand websites examined as part of a recent global Internet sweep, including those for A&W Restaurants Inc. and GlaxoSmithKline Inc., either lack privacy policies or have ones that contain inadequate or unnecessary disclosures, Canada's privacy watchdog said Tuesday.

In announcing the preliminary results of a first-ever online privacy sweep carried out by 19 data protection authorities from around the globe, Canadian Privacy Commissioner Jennifer Stoddart criticized companies for significant "shortcomings" in how websites provide information about their privacy practices.
