Walgreen Defrauded Medicare, Gave Kickbacks, FCA Suit Says

Law360, Los Angeles (August 13, 2013, 10:20 PM EDT) -- Walgreen Co. violated the False Claims Act by luring Medicare customers to its pharmacy with gift cards and other government-financed incentives, according to a suit that was unsealed in Michigan federal court Tuesday.

The complaint contains accusations that range from illegal kickbacks to defrauding Medicare and Medicaid. Walgreen pharmacists Reema Hammoud and Mark Kirsch, who filed the suit on behalf of the federal and several state governments, allege they have knowledge of several schemes run by Walgreen, the nation’s largest drug retailer.
