Predrilling Efforts Can Extend Fracking Leases, Judge Says

Law360, Philadelphia (August 15, 2013, 2:13 PM EDT) -- A Pennsylvania federal judge ruled Tuesday that natural gas producer Chief Exploration & Development LLC had properly extended leases with three property owners by laying the groundwork for drilling on property that had been pooled with their leases.

In granting partial summary judgment in favor of the Texas-based company, U.S. District Judge Matthew Brann concluded that Chief's clearing and staking activities on another property that was part of the pool were sufficient to trigger lease extensions.
