Tolkien Trustees Sue New Line For Share Of "Rings"

Law360 (February 12, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- Unlike JRR Tolkien's hobbits, lawsuits do not necessarily possess the “art of disappearing swiftly and silently.”

Trustees of the author's estate are suing film studio New Line Cinema for compensatory damages of more than $150 million and punitive damages, alleging a breach of contract for the Oscar-winning “Lord of the Rings” films.

The Tolkien estate trustees, publisher HarperCollins and trustees of British charity Tolkien Trust filed their complaint with the Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday.
