S. African Watchdog Bars Academic Book Chain Tie-Up

Law360, New York (September 4, 2013, 6:12 PM EDT) -- South Africa's antitrust watchdog on Tuesday blocked Times Media Group's Van Schaik unit from buying a rival bookstore chain after concluding the deal would hinder competition for the sale of academic books.

The South African Competition Commission ruled that even though Van Schaik's planned acquisition of Juta & Co. Ltd.'s Juta Bookshops was a small merger that didn't require the parties to file for antitrust approval, the transaction still posed too big of a risk to competition to let it go forward.
