DOJ, Executive To Allow Same-Sex Spouses Military Benefits

Law360, Los Angeles (September 4, 2013, 6:46 PM EDT) -- The U.S. government will no longer enforce a policy preventing the spouses of veterans in same-sex couples from collecting military benefits, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said in a statement Wednesday.

President Barack Obama on Tuesday directed the executive branch to cease enforcement of the law, known as Title 38 of the U.S. Code, which directed the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense to restrict benefits to same-sex spouses, even when those marriages were protected by law.
