Carnival Wins EPA Nod On $180M Pollution Test Plan

Law360, New York (September 5, 2013, 1:21 PM EDT) -- Carnival Corp. on Thursday unveiled a deal with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Coast Guard excusing 32 of its vessels from certain international treaty obligations while it tests a $180 million plan to curb air pollution with new emission control technologies.

The deal paves the way for Carnival to invest $180 million in unproven exhaust gas cleaning systems that, if successful, will allow the ships to run on comparatively dirty fuel at sea while still bringing them into compliance with international emissions limits,...
