AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines Fined $3M For Market-Sharing Deal

Law360, New York (September 6, 2013, 5:23 PM EDT) -- Malaysia’s antitrust regulator on Friday fined flag carrier Malaysian Airline System Berhad and budget airline AirAsia Berhad 10 million ringgits ($3 million) each for entering into an anti-competitive agreement to share the market for domestic routes.

In a proposed decision, the Malaysia Competition Commission said that a collaboration agreement the two airlines inked in 2011 violated the country’s Competition Act 2010, as its objective was to share markets in the air transport sector serviced by both carriers.
