NJ Gov. Vetoes Trucker Misclassification Bill

Law360, New York (September 10, 2013, 1:56 PM EDT) -- New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Monday shot down a union-backed measure that would have established a presumption that port and parcel delivery truck drivers are employees and not independent contractors, contending that such a change would make the state unfriendly to the trucking industry.

In a two-page message explaining his absolute veto, Christie said he was especially troubled by provisions in the Truck Operator Independent Contractor Act, A1578, that provided criminal penalties against companies for misclassifying drivers, even for violations that aren't willful.
