U.K. Gets EU Thumbs-Up On Telecom Deregulation

Law360, New York (February 14, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- The European Commission has given the United Kingdom the green light to deregulate the wholesale broadband market throughout the majority of the country, approving the first-ever proposal to lift regulation in areas with different markets.

Thursday's decision allows the U.K.'s Office of Communications to introduce increased competition into 65% of the country's homes and businesses. The EC found that Ofcom had presented sufficient evidence to deregulate local exchanges that have at least four actual or potential providers in areas with more than 10,000 homes.
