Sears Gets Fined Over 'Come Back Cash' Chiseling

Law360, New York (September 12, 2013, 2:15 PM EDT) -- New York's attorney general said Thursday that Sears Roebuck & Co. will pay a $150,000 fine over a promotion designed to entice shoppers to return to its stores, but which drew complaints that it unfairly trimmed customers' "Come Back Cash" rewards when they returned merchandise.

Hoffman Estates, Ill.-based Sears drew complaints after it reduced customers' reward balances when they made returns — even if the value of unreturned merchandise remained above a threshold to qualify for the reward cards.
