Lorillard, Reynolds Hit With $3.8M Verdict In Engle Suit

Law360, New York (September 23, 2013, 6:02 PM EDT) -- R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and Lorillard Tobacco Co. were slapped with $3.8 million in damages Friday in a lawsuit in Florida state court brought by the widow of an attorney who died of lung cancer after decades of smoking.

The total verdict was for $5.8 million, but the jury put 34 percent of the blame for Frank Gafney's lung cancer and death on Gafney himself. Each company was found to be 33 percent at fault for his illness and death, meaning each is liable for $1.9...
