Cargill To Pay $5M In 'Natural' Sweetener False Ad Deal
Law360, New York (September 23, 2013, 2:34 PM EDT) -- Cargill Inc. on Thursday agreed to pay $5 million and update its product advertising to escape a putative nationwide class action claiming the company deceives consumers by pitching its stevia-based Truvia sweetener as "natural" despite the use of chemical processing and genetically modified corn.
The company will provide disgruntled consumers with vouchers for Truvia based on how much of the product they purchased, and prominently direct consumers to a revamped frequently asked questions section of its website providing more in-depth information about the processing of stevia extract and sweetener additive erythritol.
