FTC Takes On $11M Sweepstakes Scam With Victims Worldwide

Law360, New York (September 23, 2013, 6:43 PM EDT) -- The Federal Trade Commission last week sued to stop a “massive” sweepstakes scam that has allegedly taken more than $11 million from consumers in the U.S. and in dozens of other countries, including the U.K., Canada, France and Japan. 

According to the FTC’s complaint, Ventura, Calif., resident Liam O. Moran and various companies he controls mail millions of consumers personalized letters stating they have won a large cash prize and can collect the prize by sending in a small fee of approximately $20 to $30....
