UK Nixes Press-Sponsored Regulation Proposal

Law360, New York (October 8, 2013, 2:39 PM EDT) -- The U.K.'s culture secretary said Tuesday the government has rejected a press-backed proposal for a regulator to oversee its actions, saying the plan lacked necessary independence from the industry.

Culture Secretary Maria Miller said while the proposal was missing some important components, a separate plan, drafted by politicians and Hacked Off, an advocacy group formed to focus public outrage over journalists' phone hacking, will be presented to Parliament on Oct. 30.
