Calif. Gov. Signs Bill Expanding Abortion Access

Law360, Los Angeles (October 9, 2013, 10:22 PM EDT) -- California Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill Wednesday that will expand abortion access by allowing nurse practitioners, certified midwives and physician assistants to perform a common abortion procedure during a woman's first trimester of pregnancy, according to the governor's office.

The bill, AB-154, will permit those nonphysician medical professionals to perform a procedure known as an aspiration abortion, which involves use of a tube and suction to remove a fetus. Democrat state Assemblywoman Toni Atkins sponsored AB-154, which goes into effect Jan. 1.
