Feds Say Exxon Can't Sue Gov't Over Contamination Cleanup

Law360, Los Angeles (October 21, 2013, 6:09 PM EDT) -- Federal prosecutors asked a New York federal judge to halt Exxon Mobil Corp.'s efforts to recover millions of dollars allegedly spent to clean up a contaminated Long Island City refining facility, saying the claims lacked subject matter jurisdiction, according to Monday court filings.

The U.S. government says it can't be sued by Exxon and Quanta Resources Corp. over claims for costs allegedly incurred by third parties, even if those claims were assigned to Exxon and Quanta as part of a settlement deal.
