Anti-Patent Troll Bill Splits Lawmakers At Hearing

Law360, New York (October 29, 2013, 4:21 PM EDT) -- Signs of a partisan divide over a new bill aimed at cracking down on so-called patent trolls emerged at a House Judiciary Committee hearing Tuesday, with Republican leaders calling for swift action to end "litigation extortion" and some Democrats warning the bill could harm the patent system.

The bill, introduced last week by Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., would heighten pleading requirements for patent cases and put limits on discovery in an effort to hinder what supporters describe as abusive litigation tactics by nonpracticing entities.
