San Francisco Latest Calif. City To Float Soda Tax

Law360, New York (October 29, 2013, 8:20 PM EDT) -- A San Francisco supervisor on Tuesday introduced a proposal to impose a special tax on sugary beverages, becoming the latest California city in recent years to try to raise funds for health and nutrition programs by regulating soft drink sales.

The proposed ordinance would impose a 2-cents-per-ounce tax on sodas, sports drinks, energy drinks and other sugar-sweetened beverages. The ordinance, which is expected to appear on the ballot in November 2014, will need to be approved by at least two-thirds of San Francisco voters to pass....
