Bill Would Shield Deepwater Funds From Sequestration

Law360, New York (November 8, 2013, 4:32 PM EST) -- A bipartisan group of U.S. senators floated legislation Thursday that would shield a congressionally mandated program that gives Gulf Coast states the bulk of civil penalties stemming from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill from any payment delays caused by federal sequestration.

The Return Our State Shares Act would exempt funds distributed to Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida and Texas through the Restore Act from being delayed for a year because of sequestration. The law provides that 80 percent of Clean Water Act penalties imposed on the...
