USPTO To Applicants: Time To End Bad Claims

Law360 (January 3, 2006, 12:00 AM EST) -- The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office is planning to revamp its patent application requirements as part of an effort to reduce its record waiting times and backlog of one million pending patents.

A proposal is in the works that would require applicants to identify the most important claims to an invention prior to review by an examiner. While the agency is actively pursuing other improvement programs, such as a massive hiring spree, the new approach foreshadows changes that will affect procedures for patent customers.
