NY Tax Dept. Illegally Audited Workers' Returns, Suit Says

Law360, New York (November 20, 2013, 5:49 PM EST) -- Five New York State Department of Taxation and Finance employees say their tax returns were unlawfully audited in retaliation for a purported leak to the New York Post, according to a federal lawsuit filed Monday.

The plaintiffs say their troubles arose after the New York Post published an article about political pressure on the state's cigarette sting operations. Two department heads were fired over the story and at least four of the five plaintiffs were suspended after the agency found alleged deficiencies in their returns. But...
