Germany Fights EU For Power To Review €9B Telecom Merger

Law360, New York (November 20, 2013, 3:09 PM EST) -- Germany's antitrust watchdog petitioned the European Commission on Wednesday for antitrust authority over a proposed €8.55 billion ($11.5 billion) tie-up between the German businesses of European telecom giants Royal KPN NV and Telefonica SA, saying the deal would only affect Germany.

The German Federal Cartel Office asked the European Union watchdog to turn over the antitrust review of the deal, even though EC competition commissioner Joaquin Almunia has already said the transaction would be reviewed at the EU level.
