Nokia's Patent Licensing Is Anti-Competitive, FTC Told

Law360, Washington (November 21, 2013, 2:59 PM EST) -- Sierra Wireless Inc. said Thursday it has asked the European Commission and Federal Trade Commission to look into Nokia Corp.'s alleged anti-competitive business practices, claiming the company discriminates against standard-essential patent licensees via royalty rates.

The Canadian technology group filed a formal complaint with the EC on Nov. 8, claiming Nokia applies “wildly different, and therefore unfair” royalty rates to SEP licensees, placing companies like Sierra Wireless at a competitive disadvantage.
