Macrovision Wins Patent Fight Over Digital Rights

Law360 (January 6, 2006, 12:00 AM EST) -- Settling a contentious patent interference over highly lucrative emerging technology, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office declared digital content protection firm Macrovision Corp. was the first to invent certain technology for managing online downloads.

The company’s rival, InterTrust Technologies Corp., instigated the action in September 2003 at the USPTO’s Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences. The move targeted Macrovision’s patents for digital rights management technology used by the video, music and software industries.
