Hotfile To Pay $80M To MPAA, Studios In Copyright Suit

Law360, Washington (December 3, 2013, 7:44 PM EST) -- The Motion Picture Association of America said Tuesday that a Florida federal court has ordered file hosting site Hotfile Corp. to pay $80 million in a copyright infringement suit brought by several film studios over Hotfile's illegal sharing of their work.

According to the MPAA, U.S. District Judge Kathleen M. Williams not only awarded damages in the case, but also ordered Hotfile to shut down its operations unless it starts using copyright filtering technologies that will prevent further infringement of the studios' films.
