HIPAA Not Being Fully Enforced, Inspector General Says

Law360, New York (December 4, 2013, 6:33 PM EST) -- The agency that enforces privacy provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act hasn’t performed required audits of how corporations handle patient information and failed to guarantee the security of its own records, according to an inspector general’s report released Wednesday.

The strongly worded report found shortcomings in areas that are “critical to the oversight and enforcement” of HIPAA’s security rule, which spells out how providers, insurers and clearinghouses are expected to safeguard the personal information of patients.
