BlackBerry Ripped Off 'Smart Dialing' Patent, Suit Says

Law360, New York (December 10, 2013, 3:04 PM EST) -- Washington, D.C.-based inventor John L. Breckenridge hit BlackBerry Ltd. and U.S. arm BlackBerry Corp. with a patent infringement lawsuit in Texas federal court Monday, saying the “smart dialing” system used in several of the company’s smartphones infringes his patent.

Breckenridge, representing himself, claims that BlackBerry has caused him irreparable harm by infringing on his patent for a smart dialing system, in which a preset “default” area code is automatically appended when a customer dials a seven digit phone number.
